We know that runes were carved onto the branches of fruitbearing trees, and it makes some sense to carve directly onto the fruits in this case. We like to think of the runes as being entirely Germanic, but our most reliable report of the use of runes in divination comes from Tactius, who often confuses the Gauls and the Germans, and may never have actually been to Germania.
